10: Select theRight Vendor Team

Putting together the best vendor team is huge. You’ll bespending a lot of time with your vendors and should surround yourself withpeople you like, relate to, and enjoy being around. It can be very stressful todiscover that you don’t get along with your vendors and that won’t help add anyexcitement to your planning. Be sure to meet each vendor before you sign acontract with them and if you aren’t feeling comfortable with them don’thesitate to interview another vendor in that category to get the best fit foryour wedding.

9: DetailedWedding Website

When it comes to wedding details, everyone wants to knoweverything. This can get a little overwhelming when the bride and groom andtheir families are constantly answering their guest’s questions on the weddinglogistics. The easiest way to cut down on these questions is to make sure you havea detailed wedding website that your guests can easily access. Be sure toinclude the date, time, and location of the ceremony as well as directions andspecial instructions for your guests. This is also a great opportunity forpersonalization; let your guests know your story as a couple not to mentionwhere you’re registered.

8: Dress

The dress is one of the most important details in manyweddings and with that comes lots of opportunities for added stress. There arethings you can do from the very beginning to make sure your dress experience isanything but overwhelming. Be sure to start the dress search early to allowtime for it to be ordered and fittings. Before you head to the bridal shopdecide on a budget and have some ideas of what details you must have in yourdream dress. When getting fitted, remember that it might not fit like a glovethe first time but this is normal and alterations will easily tailor itperfectly to you.

7: Communicate

Just like in every aspect of life, during your weddingplanning process communication is key. Communicate with your vendors,communicate with your wedding party, and most importantly communicate with yourfiancé – you are going through this process together after all. It’s easy to lose track of who knows whatinformation but the more you share with others, the less of a burden will be onyou. The more you communicate to your vendors the easier it will be for them tounderstand your vision and create the wedding of your dreams.

6: Assign jobs

We understand there’s a lot to do for a wedding and if oneperson tries to do it all, they can get easily overwhelmed. But the great thingabout a wedding is its set up with a built-in support system. There’s family,the wedding party of your closest friends, and of course your fiancé who all wantyou to have an amazing day and not be stressed throughout the process. Givethem jobs ranging from bringing the rings to the ceremony to helping makelabels for favors. They’re willing to help so why not assign them tasks thatwill take some pressure off you.

5: Thank you notes

Writing thank you notes can seem overwhelming when youconsider the growing pile of goodies arriving every day from your registry. Thebest way to handle this is to write each thank you as the gift arrives and hereat A Big To Do Event we recommend following this thank you note rule that willhelp motivate you to get those thank you’s off your to-do list: Afterunwrapping the gift, you can’t open the box or use the present in any way untilits personalized thank you note is in the mail to the sender. This way you canuse that new dishware or coffee maker without having the stress of the thankyou note weighing down on your shoulders.

4: Shoes

No wedding day look is complete without the perfect pair ofshoes. Gone are the days where you had to have your shoes dyed to match yourgown, these days anything goes and the more fabulous, the better. However, eventhe perfect wedding shoes can end up causing stress on your wedding day becauseof the one thing as women we’re willing to sacrifice: comfort for fabulousness.To reduce this stress, be sure to give yourself plenty of time before thewedding to break in your shoes. Wear them while you vacuum, wear them to thegrocery store, wear them while you watch tv. Just make sure these shoes are notgoing to be a big pain, literally, come wedding day.

Wedding day is filled with lots of little things toremember. At A Big To Do Event, we love checklists so we give our brides Day-ofChecklists to make sure packing for the wedding day is as easy as crossing anitem off the list. We’ve shared our checklist with you here to make sure you’reon the way to a stress-free wedding.

1: Be present

The most important thing to remember to make your weddingday stress-free is to really be present. Give over control, take in everymoment, have “me” time. Happy New Year!

2011 has been a fantastic year.

This year we have created 28 events that ranged from the Opening Reception of the inaugural Atlanta Food & Wine Festival, a house party at Kevin Rathbun's home, a volunteer day at Wonderland Gardens in Decatur, Georgia (both during the Atlanta Food & Wine Festival), holiday parties for non-profits and corporations, to, of course, dozens of weddings.

We've also been privileged to speak and write educational articles for our industry's best seminars and magazines. Erica Prewett has been the keynote speaker at the Plan Your Meetings LIVE events in Atlanta, Charlotte, and will be speaking in Tampa next month. She has also spoken for several Atlanta based organizations this year such as Atlanta Business Women's Association and the Wedding Alliance of North Georgia.

I am so proud of what we do at A Big To Do Event. We create memories.

The old faithful Eggnog!

Today, we cover the most traditional of Holiday beverages...

Eggnog!

This eggnog recipe uses cooked eggs instead of raw ones (I know, gross) so no worries about getting sick or sharing a non-alcohol version with little ones. To begin, combine 4 cups milk (whole milk is always better in recipes so don't use any of the skim stuff here), 5 whole cloves, 1/2 a teaspoon vanilla extract (not imitation vanilla, you WILL be able to tell the difference) and 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon in a saucepan and heat over the lowest heat setting (otherwise your milk will clump) for 5 minutes. Slowly bring this to a boil. I suggest whisking this to avoid dreaded lumps.

Now, in a large bowl whisk 12 egg yolks and 1 1/2 cups sugar until fluffy. Slowly whisk in the hot milk mixture (so you don't scramble the eggs). Pour all of this into the saucepan and cook over medium heat for 3 minutes, stirring CONSTANTLY, until thick. Please don't allow this mix to boil. Before letting this cool, strain out the cloves. Refrigerate for about an hour.

After the hour is up, stir in 2 1/2 cups light rum, 4 cups light cream, 2 teaspoons vanilla and 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg. Refrigerate overnight before serving. Love the way this looks in a stemless wine glass, pour and enjoy. Cheers Y'all!

Good afternoon everyone! Ihope you are ready for another great cocktail to make your holiday celebrationsmerrier. Today, we bring you…

The Gingerbread Cocktail!

This one calls for a littleprep work, but it is totally worth it. To make the syrup put 1 cup water, 1 1/2 cups sugar, 1-inch piece fresh ginger(thinly sliced), 2 cinnamon sticks and 3 whole clovesin a saucepan over medium heat. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat and letsimmer for about 5 minutes (until the sugar dissolves), stirring occasionally.

Now, remove the syrup from the heat andlet cool (about 20 mintues). Once cool, remove the ginger, cinnamon sticks andcloves.

For the expresso,mix 1 cup boiling water, 2 tablespoons instant espresso powder, 3 to 4tablespoons, Frangelico (hazelnut liqueur) until the powder is dissolved.Let this cool.

To make the cocktail, Combine 1 cup syrup with espresso/hazelnut liqueur mixturein a large martini shaker.Add 4 ounces Kaluha and shake to combine. Pour over ice-filled glasses andserve.

For this week’s cocktails, we will be sharing a few creamyholiday concoctions.

Today, we cover…

The Blizzard Cocktail

The best part about this is the Grand Marnier whipped cream,which you can put on anything really. I used it on pumpkin pie during Thanksgivingand it was delicious. To make this cold buster, combine 1 ½ ounces Irishwhiskey or rum, ½ an ounce hazelnut liqueur (like Frangelico), ½ an ounce Irishcream liqueur (like Bailey’s) into a clear coffee cup and stir. Top this withHOT coffee.

Now for the good stuff: To make the fluffy topping, whip 1cup of heavy cream and after it reaches the desired consistency fold in 1 ounceorange liqueur (like Grand Marnier). Garnish the drink with 1 dollop of the whipped cream andserve immediately. Cheers Y'all!

Brandy, you’re a fine drink!

This is probably my favorite cocktail we have discussed thusfar (I know it is only number 3, but it really is yummy!) It is the Apple Brandy Cordial. How could someone not like that? The name sounds like alipstick shade, and even the manliest man would enjoy this semi-sweet libation.Plus, it has a great apple base that doesn’t bring an appletini to mind (nooffense you super sweet green concoction) and is different enough from thetraditional holiday cider. Seriously y’all, this one tops the list.

This drinkis made in batches (of 4) so it’s perfect for a dinner party. In a largepitcher, combine 3/4 cup brandy, 1/2 cup apple juice, 1/3 cup Cointreau, 1/4 cup fresh lemon juice and 1/2 teaspoon angostura bitters. Fill4 glasses of your choice with ice and top that with the yummy mix. To be aproper bartender, then place an apple slice or two on the rim of the glass orjust put them right in the drink. Be creative, cheers y’all!

Happy Wednesday A Big To Do lovers!

Today’s holiday beverageputs a mulled twist on the classic Cosmopolitan, in honor of Mrs. Erica Prewett (as the Cosmopolitanis her favorite cocktail). This deliciously chic mix will warm up even the chilliestof parties. The mulling gives this cocktail a wonderful organic flavor thatfits perfectly into the evergreen and holiday spice season.

First thing you will need to do is create mulled cranberryjuice (no worries, it’s a snap). Warm 1 liter of cranberry juice with 5 dropsgrapefruit bitters**, 3 cinnamon sticks, 2 cloves and 4 orange twists (thepeel of one regular sized orange cut into fourths). Let this simmer untilfragrant, your home is going to smell delectable! Now let the mix cool andrefrigerate (will keep for around 3 days).

Now on to the big show! To make the mulled Cosmo, shake 2ounces orange or citrus vodka, 1 ounce mulled cranberry juice, ½ ounce lemonjuice and a dash of triple sec. Pour into a chilled martini glass and garnish witha clove studded orange slice (just mash a few cloves into an orange slice…those of you not from the south “mash” simply means press).

Today, we showcase….

THE GRINCH

Thisis a great conversation starter at any holiday party, due first to its lovely colorsand second to telling someone its name. However, don’t be fooled by its namesakebecause this pretty little sipper is the Grinch post loving transformation withthose cute little Who’s down in Whoville. The main ingredient here is Midori,which is melon flavored liquor with the perfect amount of sweetness.

To makethe Grinch combine 2 ounces Midori, ½ ounce lemon juice and 1 teaspoon simplesyrup in a cocktail shaker with ice then shake, shake, shake it! Pour into achilled martini glass that has been rimmed with red sugar crystals (can befound in the baking section of any grocery store). Feel free to garnish withanything that you fancy from a sprig of evergreen to a tiny red ornament. Cheers y'all!

Best Maids and Dudes of Honor

Most couples picture their wedding and one of the oh-so-important questions to answer is which of my friends I would cast as the bridesmaids and maid of honor. It occurred to me that I would really want for my brothers, who I'm really close with, to be in the wedding party. I mean, I could always bully my fiance into adopting them as groomsmen, but why not just stick 'em on my side of the altar, where they could mutter sarcastic remarks to me and pretend not to be crying during the ceremony?

I don't know if anyone else remembers this movie, but it's probably a bad example to use because Patrick Dempsey is actually plotting to make the bride his own, or some romantic comedy shenanigans like that. Regardless, this is the general concept I'm after today: using men as bridesmaids, and women as groomsmen.

I think this is a great idea! Why stick your best friend on the other side of the altar just because he's a guy? One of our brides asked her best guy friend to be her "dude of honor." It's a growing trend, and I think that getting away from typical gender roles in weddings gives us a lot more freedom.

This diagram pretty much explains it all. And I think it's great and fun that we're getting away from the standard, you-must-do-this rules of a wedding. If something fits for you and your life but doesn't fit with the "rules," why not change it? After all, your wedding should be a reflection of who you are.

So, if your best friend is of the opposite gender and you were thinking about making him or her your right hand man (so to speak), don't hold back! Why shuffle around the bridal party when you can just have everyone where he or she would feel most comfortable?

There are a million things I love about what I do. One of the most prominent reasons, though, is the relationships I develop with my brides (and the couple). No matter if the bride has decided to use us to plan the entire wedding or just uses our Month Of wedding management package, the relationship that develops in that planning process is precious to me. And sometimes I'm lucky enough to build that precious planning relationship with a current friend.

Katie Buice Waters is one of those precious friends to me.

Wedding Hair

It's the ages-old conflict: hair up or hair down? Flying solo or with an accessory? Curly or straight? It's like being faced with a giant menu at an awesome restaurant. No matter what you get, you'll love it, but it feels like you can't pick just one thing. The bottom line, and thing to remember throughout your wedding beautification process: your partner wants to recognize you as you walk down that aisle. If you are a "always wear my hair up" person, consider an elegant version of that. If you always wear your hair down, do a version of that. If your signature is a braid, consider this...

The waterfall braid, pictured above, is becoming super popular, like a lot of other intricate braid hairstyles. I'm kind of obsessed with this style... I do think it would look great if you want to go for a fairly basic style with a little twist.

Then there's the classic twisty bun thing. (You can tell I'm a hair expert from all of my super-technical names for these styles.) I feel like this style will never get old. It keeps your hair out of your face, it's beautiful, and you can vary it however you want. And you can always, always find a gorgeous pin to add for some loveliness; Etsy is a good place to start looking.

If a pin isn't your thing, you can always play around with flowers to add color and texture. My friend and I always talk about the lovely mountain wedding she will invariably have someday, and she loves the idea of a little flower crown. This is also very versatile--you can go big or small, make the flowers a focus or just an accent.

I love to see all the vintage styles that are coming back. Nothing better than a flapper, right? A lot of these styles are popping up on blogs with handy how-to tutorials, so you can even do them yourself or get a friend to learn rather than getting your hair done.

Indian Wedding at The Fabulous Fox Theatre Video

We had the awesome opportunity to work with Tejal and Bobby, both busy professionals in the medical world, for the past six months. The goal was to create a wedding that was a fusion of Hindu and Christian cultures, Indian and American foods, and lots of dancing. We chose Piedmont Park as our location for the ceremony, then The Fabulous Fox Theatre in Midtown Atlanta for the reception. We utilized the Grand Salon at The Fox for the cocktail hour and the Egyptian Ballroom for dinner and dancing.

Most brides picture their wedding and one of the oh-so-important questions to answer is which of my friends I would cast as the bridesmaids and maid of honor. It occurred to me that I would really want for my brothers, who I'm really close with, to be in the wedding party. I mean, I could always bully my fiance into adopting them as groomsmen, but why not just stick 'em on my side of the altar, where they could mutter sarcastic remarks to me and pretend not to be crying during the ceremony?

Sky Lantern Grand Exit

Ever since I saw the movie Tangled, I have been dying to visit Taiwan during their Sky Lantern Festival!

Thousands of people travel to the country each year to experience the sixteen-day-long festival during which they write a wish on a piece of paper, attach it to a lantern, light the lantern with a flame, and allow it to float to the sky.

What struck me is how this would look for a grand exit. Lovely, huh?

I am so obsessed with this idea. I've done it once before for the 4th of July, and it was a beautiful experience. The effect is especially grand when the moon is out and it's a clear night. Your guests will absolutely love it; they each get their own lantern and write down a wish your you and your new spouse. When it's time for the grand exit, your family and friends light their lanterns and let them float to heaven around you.

The concerns are, of course, that the lanterns will inadvertently burn down your reception site. But so long as there's not a strong wind (above 5 mph) and you're not near an airport or dry crops, the lanterns are perfectly safe. As with anything involving fire, there are safety guidelines to follow closely. (And if any of your relatives have been hanging around the open bar all night, you might want to just give them some rose petals to throw.)

Smash Cakes

In one episode of How I Met Your Mother, Marshall talks about the best wedding cake he ever tasted, saying, "It haunts me." That's how I feel about this cake: it's not technically a cake, but more of a chocolate shell in the shape of a cake.

Isn't this brilliant? If you're not a cake person, you can opt out of the standard issue multi-tier white wedding cake and go for a smash cake instead. When it's time to cut the cake, the couple pulls out a little hammer instead of a knife and smashes apart the cake!

Everyone gets a shard of chocolate. If you choose to stuff the cake with something like candy or chocolates, your guests can pile some of that onto their plates, as well! It's like the wedding version of a piñata! Isn't that fun? I love the idea of a bride and groom whipping out a hammer at the reception and making all of their guests do a complete double take.

Some Glitz for the Wrists

It's always cute when grooms find a way to let their personalities pop up in the wedding--and often hilarious. At a wedding we did recently, the groom donned a pair of light-up cufflinks for the reception. I thought it was adorable and showed a sense of humor, which is very much a necessity for getting through such an emotionally charged day.

It got me thinking about how else grooms can add some panache to their sleeves. I discovered these amazing heart-shaped cufflinks (also light-up!) from the Cufflinks Depot (who knew there was one?).

I also remembered seeing these incredible cufflinks from the Etsy shop Tomatomade. They make custom cufflinks out of vintage maps. I think this would be perfect for a wedding! The cufflinks could feature maps of the bride's and groom's hometowns. Sweet, no?

That got me on an Etsy kick, and I found these, as well! I feel like they're the male version of the "I Do" stickers that some brides stick to the bottoms of their shoes. They're incredibly cute! These ones are from the shop Tippy Tumble, which makes all kinds of gorgeous things.

How to Have a Great Engagement Photo Session

I had the privilege of shadowing a brilliant photographer, Renee Brock, during an engagementsession this weekend with two adorable law students. I’m only an amateur photographer, butthe shoot was beautiful and I learned a lot from it.

First of all, choose your photographer well. And I don’t mean choose an expensivephotographer. Make sure it’s someonewhose style you like and whose subjects’ personalities show through theirwork. That will make it a lot easier foryou to open up for the camera. Plus, theengagement session can serve as a test run for a photographer, so even if youdon’t end up liking this one, it will help out in choosing one for thewedding day.

Don’t be afraid to open up! By all means, let your freak flag fly. You may not know your photographer very well, but he or she will have amuch easier time of capturing your personality if you come out of your shell abit. This is the best way to avoid lame,cliché photos: just be yourself.

Pick a great location. It’s best if you’re familiar with the location, and it's magical and goldenif you have history with the place. Forinstance, the bride I helped photograph this weekend grew up aroundfarms, so they chose a friend’s adorable farm for the shoot. It was gorgeous, and the typical, cheesy,sitting-on-the-tractor shots had no appeal for them because they associated itwith mowing the lawn. Instead, we gotsome gorgeous shots of them picking the fruit they knew by name and goofingaround in a crumbly old farm.

Have fun! This isn’t something to prepare for, really. Just bring a sense of humor (and a change ofboots for walking around a farm property—smart woman!) and your pictures willturn out great. Don’t worry about fakesmiles and weird poses. If you or yourspouse-to-be can’t smile for real, crack a joke. Shake out the stiffness. If a pose feels weird, don’t hold it. And most of all, keep it spontaneous. Some of the best shots, in my opinion, aremade when couples go rogue and do something unexpected.

Last, use the photos well! You can use your engagement photos for a huge range of things, from guestbooks to framed photos for your new home to sweet cards. I remember Joanna of Cup of Jo used hers for their save the date, and it turned out adorably (like everything that woman does).

On Behalf of Bridesmaids Everywhere...

They say that when you direct a play, you shouldn't be friends with the cast because by the end of the show, they'll all hate you. I don't think the same concept should apply to brides organizing their weddings.

And that is why I am of the firm belief that bridesmaids' dresses don't have to be ugly! They can be really, really pretty! Bridesmaids' dresses do NOT have to look like this:

But there are some easy ways to avoid the typical ugly-bridesmaid-dress syndrome. For one, you can just pick a basic color scheme and ask your bridesmaids to wear their own dresses that fit with the scheme. That adds some great variety (but not chaos) to the wedding photos and ensures that each can pick a dress that flatters her body type in a color and cut that she likes.

If you want a really super pretty lineup of bridesmaids, you can always go for a rainbow gradient. I think this idea is incredibly adorable. I'm the kind of person who always lines up my M&M's in rainbow order, so for the OCD guests in your audience, I have to tell you to make sure they line up in color order if they do this.

Another great option, which I think adds a lot to the texture of the look of your bridal party, is to have a patterned bridesmaid dress. It's not too far from the beaten path of solid color dresses, but is still fresh enough to give the standard lineup a new twist.

Of course, you can always go for the classic, matching look; that pretty much never fails, especially if you choose a pretty color. J.Crew happens to have some gorgeous bridesmaid dresses...I don't think it's even possible for anyone to look bad in one of these.

Destination Wedding: Success

Many of you remember Sarah Hitt. She was our amazing intern who got engaged about a year ago. She wrote a couple of posts (Guess Who Is Getting Married and The Beginning Details) about her wedding planning process.

Well Sarah's wedding was earlier this month. On October 8, 2011, I was lucky enough to be asked to be the planner who helps Sarah and Slayden celebrate their first day of married lives. Here's what Sarah had to say about her wedding weekend.

Let me start by saying this: My wedding was perfect. And I can say without a doubt A Big To Do Event played a HUGE role in making that happen. Erica and her staff made sure not only all the plans were in place, but back-up plans and “just-in-cases” were ready too.

Having a destination wedding made me a bit nervous when dealing with island details and vendors. Having Erica there for the weekend made all the difference in the world.

I could write example after example of Erica’s detailed planning and execution of my event. Many people think they do not need a wedding planner because they can handle it themselves. There is a big difference between can and should. With Erica by my side (actually in the backdrop J) I did not have to worry about anything except savoring every minute of my special day. My family as well as guests have asked about Erica since my event and know she is a big reason the event went off without a hitch.

During big occasions the host already has a lot on their mind. Erica not only takes care of things so you don’t have to, she takes care of them without you knowing they were ever an issue. Erica allowed me to be fully present at my wedding without nagging logistics questions in my head. As valuable as Erica was to me, she was equally (if not more) valuable to my mom who otherwise would have been carrying the burden of logistics, tasks.

A wedding is arguably the most important event of your life. There is no one I would trust more than Erica with protection of this day.

P.S. With only a 30% chance of rain and fairly sunny skies we were optimistic when taking pictures. But what is a bridal party to do when it starts to rain on our parade? Easy DIY Project!

I just ran across this fabulous post on Elizabeth Anne Designs.

I'm loving the white with a pop of color! It really makes the centerpieces stand out. My only concern is that they would roll off of the table or something (because that is something that would happen to me), but you can probably prevent that easily by stationing candles or other items around the spheres.

Such an easy DIY. Just wrap string around a blown up balloon, spray with fabric hardener, pop balloon and now you have a precious centerpiece idea! Just make sure you leave a big enough hole somewhere to pull the pieces of balloon out once you've popped it.

One of their suggestions was to hang these behind the altar or from some rafters. That would create such a fairyland effect! (And it would also keep them from rolling off of your tables at inopportune moments.)

A couple of weekend's ago, I got a hankering to repaint my office.

While I was repainting, I was listening to an ipad app called "Aweditorium." If you haven't downloaded it, go do it now. It's all of the "new and not-on-the-radio, therefore not-at-anyone-else's-wedding" music. A lot of it is from artists overseas that don't get much mention in the States.

Via Aweditorium I heard this fantastic diddy that would be a fantastic addition to any reception playlist.

At a recent wedding, I came across some cake toppers that changed my life. ...Okay, they haven't changed my life. But they are pretty darn cute. All of the toppers are totally custom. You send a picture of the wedding attire (dress and suit/tux), and of you two, and they craft a handmade cake topper to look just like the couple on your wedding day! I'll let the pictures speak for themselves...

Bouquets: Personalized and Pretty!

I love bold colorology when it comes to flower arrangements, but I especially love the personal touches that some brides have taken to including in their bouquets. What better way to welcome marriage than with magnetic poetry or a pretty locket?

This concept opens up a whole new door to creative flower adornments. It doesn’t have to be anything flashy, or even necessarily visible, just something sweet to add a touch of personality to the blooms, like maybe an antique pocket watch (wouldn't that be pretty?). I could definitely go for a bouquet with pretty brooches pinned around the stems. Another popular option is to wrap your mother’s or grandmother’s rosary around the bouquet.

I think it would be incredibly sweet if a bride added a lucky charm to her bouquet—wouldn’t that be a fitting thing to have in your hands as you walk down the aisle?

And then there are nontraditional bouquets, which I love. Paper flowers at a wedding are adorable, affordable, and immortal!

I love how quirky and bright this bouquet is! I think my favorite thing about nontraditional flower options is that you can use them to showcase your personality and make them fit with your color palette and wedding theme. And it's so easy!

The Groom's Uniform: Not Necessarily Traditional

It’s nice to see variations on the standard tux-wearing groom. You pretty muchcan’t go wrong with a tuxedo on your wedding day, guys, but it’s just sorefreshing to see something simpler. There are plenty of ways to keep the jacket off and still manage to lookdapper.

I don’t know why, but there’s just something about a bunchof guys in vests that says fun to me.

It’s a way to avoid a stifling tuxedo on the wedding day butalso manage to keep it pretty classy. Maybe it’s just because I’m a huge Patrick Jane fan, but this is my favorite look for groomsmen.

It’s also nice when the guys opt out of jackets and vestsaltogether and go for a simple button down (or cardigan) and bow tie or tie. You’ve got to be able to pull it off, but itcan look great if you can! I think thislook is lovely at a fall or summer wedding:

Maybe it’s just the Southerner in me, but I adore bow tiesat weddings. They’re sweet, quirky, andstill fit with the formal attire motif. The idea is spreading like crazy; there are tons and tons of bow tieoptions out there. It’s easy to pick onethat represents your personality!

Green Wedding Shoes had a marvelous post about bow ties. My particular favorite is this one from Etsy shop xoelle.

Unsurprisingly, men tend to be the big complainers atweddings when it comes to shoe pains. They’re just not used to the formal-shoe-induced pain that women dealwith on the daily. Some groomsmen,anticipating this, choose to spare themselves and go with something a littlemore whimsical.

Shutterfly Guestbook

Guest books are an important part of a wedding. They show who came to celebrate your wedding day with you, as well as show who supports your choice to create a new life together.

Recently, I created a picture book on Shutterfly for A Big To Do Event, and thought this could be a great idea for a unique Guest Book!

This was such a fun project and easy to do!

You can choose one of two options on how to create your photo book.

The Custom Path allows you to have between 1-25 pictures per page. You can add,

move, and resize pictures and text anywhere on your pages. There are many backgrounds,

layouts, and embellishments you can choose from as well.

The Simple Path allows you to have between 1-4 pictures per page. The pictures are

arranged for you, with over 20 styles of preset backgrounds and layouts.

In both paths, you can choose your book size. Either 5 x 7, 7 x 9, 8 x 8, 8 x 11,

or 12 x 12. The books are all 20 pages, but you can add pages if necessary.

When creating the book, there is often much free space on the pages. This is where you

can have the guests sign. Use a Sharpie pen that will write nicely on the

thick, glossy pages of your book.

This is such a fun idea, and a great way to get creative with your fiance.

Add pictures of the two of you growing up, and some of you together

throughout your relationship.

Fingerprint Guestbook Tree

I love the idea of having a unique guest book. I know it is traditional to have

everyone sign their names in a book, but this is so much more memorable and personal.

Instead of the boring book, do a Fingerprint Tree instead!

Get a picture of a barren tree (with no leaves), and let the guests put their fingerprints as the leaves.

Offer your guests many different colors, that go with your color scheme of course.

Wish Lantern Grand Exit

Ever since I saw the movie, Tangled, I have been dying to visit Taiwan during their Sky Lantern Festival!

Thousands of people travel to the country each year to experience the 16 day long festival during which they write a wish on a piece of paper, attach it to a lantern, light the lantern with a flame, and allow it to float upwards (some say to heaven).

Could be a cool Grand Exit idea, eh?

brides tell us her fiance will be dancing with his mother to another song from the musical.

I love this song. It is such a fantastic song for the Mother/Son dance! Its lyrics talk
about someone always being happy to see you and watch you grow up.

Tipping... Who and How Much??

One of the most common questions I get from Brides and her parents is

"Who do we tip and how much is appropriate?"

The general rule of thumb is to tip the vendors who stay for the entire wedding.

Example: Clergy, Musicians, Caterer, Wedding Planner, Photographer, Videographer.

So what about the florist, baker, etc.? They've put as much time as those who stay for the entire wedding day, right? My answer: Absolutely. If you are thrilled with their work, give a tip to your wedding planner and tell her it's for the baker/florist/etc. Your wedding planner will mail that vendor their gift.

First, let's look at the entire budget. The average bride spends about $29,000 on her wedding. So if your thought is, "I've already spent $13,000 on catering. Why should I tip on top of that?" let's look at your catering contract. If there is a 20% service charge in addition to labor fees and sales tax, that's normal. That 20% goes toward the staff's gratuity at the end of the night. The caterer is responsible for handing out that money to the staff.

HOWEVER (and I'm not sure I can write that in bigger, more note-worthy font so I'll say it again) HOWEVER, if you have amazing service, an additional tip is always appreciated. Typically you will have a dedicated server - someone whose only job that night is to make sure your glass never goes empty, that you are alternating between an alcoholic beverage and water, and to make sure you have everything you need. (For example, if your favorite fruit is grapes and your VIP Server sifts through the fruit tray and brings you only grapes, that counts as amazing service.) A good tip for a VIP Server is $50-$100. If the entire service staff rocked, I'd recommend $50 per server.

Keep in mind, most of these vendors have been working with you for upwards of 4-6 months or longer and are charging a flat fee. There is no "service charge" in your photographer's contract. So if he/she does a fabulous job, makes you feel comfortable all night, and falls in easily with your guests, he/she is *working* continuously through the day.

Here's an easy breakdown:

Clergy: $25 - $100

Baker: not necessary, but always appreciated in any amount

Caterer: $50 - $100 for VIP Server or $50 per server

Florist: not necessary, but always appreciated in any amount

Photographer: $50 - $100

Videographer: $50 - $100 (I recommend sending this after you get your DVD!)

Wedding Planner: $50 -$100

Band: $50-$100 per member

DJ: $50-$100

Here are a list of vendors who will get their gratuity at the end of the night regardless of if you slip them some cash.

Venue: (it's not necessary to tip the hotel)

Limo Driver: (his/her gratuity is built in to the fee and will not be split among others as in the case of servers and caterers)

Site Contact: (the person at your venue who shows up to make sure the lights are on / the Church Lady)

Remember, the BEST gratuity you can give a vendor is a letter thanking them for their amazing service. That vendor can post your letter and picture on their website and get more business because of your props. If you've been married for a couple of months, take a walk down memory lane and think about your vendors. If one sticks out in your mind as *phenomenal*, tell them about it. It's not too late. They'll appreciate it.

In 2005, Sarah walked into her first day of work after college and she would have never guessed that afternoon she would meet her future husband in her first-ever work meeting. Keith was lucky enough to be in the cube that was diagonal from Sarah so that whenever she had a work question (“How do I use Outlook??”), he was Sarah’s first stop. Work questions turned into personal ones and before they knew it, they had become friends.

Then one day Sarah got to work early so she walked further than normal to go to the “good bagel place” and picked up a bagel and lox and thought Keith would want one too. She brought one back and put it on his desk. It wasn’t until she mentioned this to one of her friends that she thought, “Huh, I don’t normally buy bagels and lox for everyone. Maybe Keith and I are more than just friends . . . ” It was not long after that when New Years 2006 came along and they were at the same party. Their midnight kiss turned quickly into a loving relationship. Keith and Sarah have a great time together cooking dinner at night, hiking, or traveling around Europe. They always find themselves laughing and based on their smiles that plastered their faces on their wedding day, we know they’re for real!

Sarah's Wedding Part II- The Beginning Details

This weekend marked three months until the big day! THREE MONTHS?! I HAVE SO MUCH TO DO! It is no wonder the average engagement is 14 months; we are having an eight month engagement and I feel like there is ALWAYS something to do!

So let me start with some advice:
- Keep a journal during your engagement. This journal should include everything from the proposal, to asking your bridesmaids, planning, fun memories and everything in-between!

Speaking of many of those events... I have lots to fill you in on!

Once I got my venues secured I had a few things I knew I needed to take care of. I knew choosing our bridal party needed to be one of our first tasks! We have some many important people in our lives and narrowing them down was a difficult task. I wanted to do something that would be unique to our wedding and special to my best friends.

I decided to buy bathing-suit bags for each of my girls. The front said, "Let's hit the beach!" I wrote each of them a note asking if they would join me on the ultimate beach trip. It was something that was not a huge expense, but was special to each of them!

Now it was time to get organized. Creating the ultimate wedding binder would help keep my mom and me on track until the wedding! We divided the wedding into different sections such as: Attire, flowers, details, colors, budget, etc. We used sleeve protectors in the binder so I could pull pages from magazine and easily sort them! We also put a calendar in the front of the binder with a printable month for every month until the wedding. Lastly, we printed out a timeline of what needs to be done when to help (try) to keep us on track!

Until I could move on to any other decision I had to decide on a theme for the wedding. How you want people to feel when they leave the wedding is an important part of all you decision making. Do you want a romantic affair? A whimsical evening? Or a casual afternoon? While some of the "themes" will overlap it is important to decide what you are going for before you move onto the big details.

For me, I wanted people to leave feeling like they just left a dinner party with all their best friends. Since we are having a relatively small wedding, I want everyone to leave with their heart full after spending a long night with people important to them. Since we are in historic venues, we are keeping things classic/traditional in our attire and decorating.

We have all heard different songs for the bouquet toss part of the reception, but these days it seems there is only one song that is played, "Single Ladies" by Beyonce. If you ask me, it is a good idea to switch this song up, so I have made it my job this week to find some other suggestions for the bouquet toss song.

Color Palette: Navy and Coral

Today's color palette is super fun! It is girly, but can easily be incorporated into some fun things your fiance will love as well. I adore the way they go together so easily and really compliment each other! You can go with a more chic design or even go the nautical route.

DIY Wedding Signs

I am loving the DIY wedding signs lately!

It is easy to do and a unique touch for your day. These signs add so much character to a wedding, and it is easy to be creative and add your own touches on them.

They don't cost much money, and if you are lucky you may already have some of the things you need!

Here is what you Need:

1. A piece of wood. Or a few depending on how many signs you plan to make.

2. Leftover paint. You do not need much maybe half a cup.

3. A small paintbrush.

4. A few hours.

How To:

Draw on a piece of paper the word you want to paint on the wood. Remember Bubble Letters in elementary school? This is the time to re-visit that skill! Or you can go the easy route and find a font you like on Word and print them on the computer. Make sure it is the size you want it to appear on the sign. With scissors, cut out the word, e.g. "Wedding."

Place the paper on top of the wood and tape it in place so it doesn't move.

Draw a pencil line along the edges of the word, so that when you remove the paper

you can see the outline of "Wedding."

Now you are ready to add the paint. Use a small paint brush to fill in the penciled

outline with your paint. It may be a good idea to go over the word a few times to

make sure it is able to be seen from a distance.

When your paint is dry, cut the piece of wood (if you haven't done so already) to the

chosen size.Then you can attach it to a pole with a few screws, or use a rope

or chain to hang it from an archway.

I hope you have fun creating your own signs. Be creative and make them "you!"
